Belem is an area in the South West of the city from where Portugal's exploration of the seas began, and is the harbour. It has several fascinating museums to the maritime history of the city, which are an easy place to spend a few hours exploring.
The Baixa region is home to some of the best shopping in the city, and also the famous Elevador de Santa Justa, an imposing cast iron building that contains a lift linking Baixa to the Bairro Alto.
On the hills that make up the city, there are some excellent spots for views known as Miradouros. In particular, the Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara, which is accessible on the funicular railway the Elevador de Gloria, and has views over the Baixa region.
