On the West bank of the Danube, Buda is a more residential area, although it is home to the castle with its superb views over the countryside and the city, and the impressive Royal Palace, which was home to members of the Hapsburg dynasty when they ruled Hungary.
Pest on the East is the more interesting part of the city for tourists however, and it is there that you can visit the amazing domed cathedral, St Stephen's Basilica, the National Museum which has fascinating exhibits on the rich history of Hungary, and the State Opera House which regularly hosts well priced events, and is a must for visitors to the city.
City Park, which is accessed through Heroes Square, is home to the gallery of fine art, the Budapest Zoo, and the Municipal Great Circus. The park is a relaxing place to visit throughout the year, particularly in Winter when the lake in the centre freezes over, and it makes a picturesque place to ice skate against the backdrop of the castle built on an island in the middle.
The city is also home to a set of thermal spa baths that are open throughout the year. Resting on a natural Hot spring, visitors travel from all over the country to take treatments and wash in the warm waters at the Kiraly Baths.
