Many of the most impressive attractions of Athens are those that remain from the ancient Greeks, who built a complex civilisation centred on the city from around 3000 years ago.
The best place to start a tour of the city is in the National Archaeological Museum in the centre of the city, as this gives a great overview of everything else that you might see later in your stay, and shows you how the ruins looked when they were originally constructed.
From the Museum, you should make time to see the acropolis - a tough walk to the top on a hot day, and also the Agora ruins, the beautiful Theatre of Dionysus, which still hosts performances of Greek tragedies to this day, and also the Temple of Zeus on Mount Olympus.
Also worth seeing are the Olympic stadium and the presidential Palace - although you should avoid photographing any government buildings.
