Athens remains the home of the Olympic games, as it was from their origin in Ancient Greece, when the many city states would compete against each other for the favour of the Gods, and the modern games will return there in 2004 in what will no doubt be a true festival of global sport.
The city is also home to the mighty AEK Athens, and Panathaniakos, who contest the Greek football title, as well as being prominent within the European tournaments. Tickets to football matches are usually available on the day of the match, apart from the passionately contested local derby matches, which sell out well in advance.
