The most popular sport - no question - in Istanbul is football, and no less than 3 teams represent the city in the Turkish League - and often in European football as well.
Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas are the biggest teams in the city, and attract rabidly committed fans. Derby matches tend to see passions overflow onto the streets afterwards, although actual violence against other local fans is out of the question, it's a good idea to keep a low profile after an international or UEFA match, when the atmosphere can get a little nasty ("welcome to hell" banners, throat slitting gestures, and the occasional casual stabbing are not unknown during the aftermath of football matches in the city).
