The currency used in Malaysia is the Ringitt, which has a value tied to the US Dollar, and these are also widely accepted. You can change money in many places throughout the city, and although banks do not give best value, they are more trustworthy than street traders who may promise a good deal, but then take a large commission.
Credit cards are widely accepted in larger stores and hotels, although not at many market stalls. You can withdraw money from many bank machines using a visa or cirrus card.
Tipping is not compulsory, nor always expected, more expensive restaurants may charge 10% service on top of the price, but if not, 5-10% is sufficient in most places for good service.
