Malaysian Borneo is made up of two main parts, Sarawak and Sabah, and occupies the northern half of the island (the south is Indonesian) surrounding the tiny state of Brunei.
Most tourists come to Sabah, the eastern half of the territory, where the resort of Kota Kinabalu, and Sandakan are found. Aside from the spectacular beaches and diving resorts on the northern coast, Sabah also has vast tracts of unspoilt rainforest to explore in order to see a huge variety of animals including orang-utans, and bearded pigs.
Sabah also includes the many islands making up the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, where some of the best beaches and diving in the whole of the Far East are available.
Sarawak is more developed, with intensive logging and farming eroding the rainforest habitat of the exotic species, which is causing concern for environmentalists world wide, but still has plenty of interest to travellers, including the city of Kuching, many forest dwelling tribes and also the famous Niah Caves.
A popular holiday destination for many years, particularly appealing to the eco tourists, Borneo is fast becoming a place where you can stain in luxury resort hotels and be pampered in spas in between treks into the jungle or mountains as well as offering good value shopping and a variety of action sports such as white water rafting on the rivers that flow through it.
