The image of Casablanca that almost everyone has before they visit is that of resistance and romance in the face of peril in a sleazy north African city, which was engendered by the Humphrey Bogart film.
These days, there are no Nazis, and no sign of Sam's Bar, and the old Casablanca, the last outpost of civilisation on the fringes of the endless anarchic wastelands is pretty much gone. Because of the international flavour that has grown up in this evocative port city, you're more likely to hear the sound of a mobile phone as you walk along the street that the sound of the Muezzin calling the faithful to prayer, and the veneer of respectability that has been carefully placed in order to make the city appeal to tourists is hard to get behind.
If you persevere though, and search for the real city, the fleeting glimpses of traditional Morocco that you see finally coalesce, and the mirage of respectability can be breached to let you into a world behind the image, and you find yourself in an ancient city of medinas and mosques, of ancient souks where you can haggle over the price of a carpet and take a hit from a shisha pipe with a local as you bargain over a cup of strong Arabic coffee.
You can get cheap deals on flights and accommodation in Casablanca throughout the year, and with such a low cost of living, as well as plenty to see and do in the city, a visit to Casablanca, whether just as a short city break, or a longer holiday relaxing on the nearby beaches will leave you with plenty of great memories.
