It was reported yesterday that Lufthansa, the powerful German carrier, had seen a seventy-eight percent increase in third quarter earnings compared with a year ago.
The figure was reported to be 586 million Euros, up from 329 million Euros in the previous year. This sort of figure, both in terms of actual volume and percentage increase is outstanding. It does include a one off reduction in tax payments of 211 million Euros but even so, the overall performance of the airline is excellent.
Lufthansa, who provide a comprehensive range of services across the globe, not just the flights to Frankfurt that are a staple of the business traveller, have created a very profitable and strong business model, also incorporating Swiss, which they bought a while ago.
The carrier are predicting a full year profit in the region of 1.3 billion Euros, figures that will also strengthen their position in the potential takeovers of Iberia and Alitalia, both of which are being considered.
