As the price of oil continues to rise so the airlines feel the pinch, the latest one being Lufthansa, who have just announced a fuel surcharge applicable from Friday 20 July.
From this date there will be an additional 10 Euros to pay for each leg of the passengers journey. The extra cost takes the total fuel surcharge to a considerable 62 Euros, currently over GBP 40. This is for flights that go outside Europe from Germany only, so for example flights to Brazil from Munich would attract the extra charge but flights to Spain from Munich would not. These flights would only have a basic 12 Euros per flight segment added, a charge that has been in place for a little while.
The airline has said that it will keep a close eye on fuel prices and adjust fuel surcharges in line with the crude oil prices as they fluctuate. It will, of course, be interesting to see if there is a reduction in the surcharge should the oil price come down, as leaving it unchanged would improve profitability in a highly competitive market.
