The Open Skies Agreement, where carriers will be able to cross the Atlantic from any European airport, is set to revolutionise the provision of flights to USA, although BMI will have to wait a while due to the development of Terminal 5 at Heathrow.
BMI were originally going to begin their US services from London Heathrow at the end of this year but are now looking at sometime in 2009 thanks to the passengers at the airport being faced with delays and difficulties due to the ongoing work on Terminal 5. The airline does not want to begin a new service in such a testing environment, preferring instead to wait until they can do it properly.
In the meantime of course there will be carriers using both Heathrow and other airports to provide services on these very popular transatlantic routes. BMI does use Manchester already. With their flights to New York being one of the most popular services offered.
