The premier reason for visiting Penang has to be the beaches, and of a great bunch, Batu Ferrenghi is the most popular, mainly for the fact that it is the location for many of the best hotels on the island. The hotels occupy a long strip of prime beachfront property, and stretch along the coast. Penang Centre is nearby, and has some great nightclubs and bars, to which crowds of people flock in the evening to party until dawn.
The city of Georgetown was one of the first British Colonies in Malaysia, and to this day it has retained much charm. It has a great deal of Chinese influence, and a charming Chinatown area where you can eat a great meal, visit one of the unique clan houses, where families would meet and worship together.
The Temple of 10,000 Buddhas is one of many Buddhist sites on Penang, which are well worth seeing, particularly the enormous 33m long reclining Buddha.
A highlight of the island is the famous Snake Temple, which is filled with poisonous snakes that slither everywhere in the buildings, although visitors are safe because the amount of incense in the air leaves the animals fully drugged up, and pretty happy.
