Naples Things to do in Naples

A guide with advice on Things to do in Naples. Choose from Naples's best attractions, museums, parks, tours, entertainment, and much more.

Something that no visitor to the area around Naples should miss out on are the ruins of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were both destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD.

Although some of the most important remains have been extracted to the Museo Archaeologico Nazionale in Naples itself, including many of the mosaics, the ruins themselves, preserved beneath the ashes of the eruption are staggering, and very poignant, with the casts of bodies remaining in the poses they fell in, and the graffiti on the walls a reminder that these were real places where real people lived.

The ruins do tend to get rather crowded, but there are plenty of things to see, some of which are fascinating, others upsetting, but all are remarkable. The sad story of the cities, completely eradicated by fate is one that will profoundly affect most people, and the thought that the streets you wander through, and the buildings that have so far been unearthed by the ongoing archaeological process are not a museum, but real life objects of man's weakness in the face of nature will give you a whole new perspective on life itself.
