Aside from all of the main public holidays celebrated in Italy, Naples also reserves a special place for the festivals of the local patron saint, San Genarro, whos remains are said to be buried in the catacombs under the city. People head to the city's cathedral on the first Sunday in May, as well as 19 September and 16 December to watch as phials of the saint's blood change miraculously from solid to liquid in front of their eyes.
A less spiritual, but no less exciting event is the Neapolis Rock festival in summer, when top musicians from all over the world converge on the Arenile do Bagoli Beach in order to perform in a music festival that can easily be described as Glastonbury without the rain or hippies.
