Across the whole of Italy, food is one of the greatest passions after Ferrari, and meals can go on for hours, with each course being lingered over and enjoyed. Italy is the home of pasta, and almost every meal will include at least one variety, usually with a sauce specific to the region - Neapolitan (tomato and basil with garlic and olive oil) comes from Naples, Bolognese (minced meat with tomato and garlic &c) originates in Bologna, but there are many more besides.
Other favourites include beef carpaccio, which is a Tuscan dish of raw beef seasoned with black pepper and lemon juice (delicious), various types of garlic sausage such as salami, and or course Pizza, which is widely derided as a peasant food, but enjoys great popularity.
Although Italy as a whole has a reputation for being expensive, meals are good value for money, and you normally get a hearty portion accompanied by some of the finest wines known to man.
