With 5 championship standard golf courses including The Montgomery, the Dubai Creek, and the 2 courses at Emirates Golf Club, The Wadi, and The Majilis, which hosts the annual Dubai Desert Classic Golf Tournament, fans of the sport are spoilt for choice. The courses are some of the most challenging in the world and boast excellent facilities. They are all spike free, and players require a handicap of less than 28 for men and less than 45 for women. Tuition and driving practice are available on site. People wanting to use the courses should book well in advance.
Although gambling is not allowed in Dubai, there are horse-racing meetings throughout the year, culminating in the Dubai Gold Cup. People come from miles around to watch the races, and it is possible to but scratch cards and predict the winner and win prizes. These range from household goods like televisions through to luxury cars. Camel racing is also very popular, and there are usually races every week.
Sports fans are spoilt for choice throughout the year. March sees Dubai hosting the Desert Classic golf tournament, and the Dubai Gold Cup - The richest horse race in the world. Early December sees the Dubai Rugby Sevens attracting world-class players, and the tournament is fast becoming a rival to the Hong Kong Sevens. With a world-class motor racing circuit already under construction, Dubai is hoping that within a few years it will play host to the Formula One circus with its own Grand Prix.
The sea around Dubai is warm throughout the year, and most of the hotels have private beaches where guests can enjoy a variety of water sports. Off the coast, artificial reefs for diving have been created by deliberately sinking ships, and most hotels will offer boat trips and tuition for those wanting to explore the undersea environment.
