Originally a pearl fishing village on the banks of Dubai Creek, the Emirate of Dubai grew in prominence as a trading centre at the gateway between Asia and the Arabian Gulf. Unlike some of the more inward looking countries in the region, the outside influences took hold in Dubai, and created a cosmopolitan and friendly city that was always welcoming and hospitable to visitors eager to trade goods through its port.

With the discovery of oil in the 1950s, Dubai grew in prominence, and wealth and quickly saw opportunities for economic growth and development. As increasing numbers of overseas workers entered the Emirate as part of the oil industry, Dubai became more and more important as a regional centre, and the liberal attitudes and tax free economy subsidised by the oil attracted many companies to set up their regional headquarters in the city.

When the award winning Emirates Airline began flying in the mid 1980s, Dubai became the hub of the network, and drawn by the economy of trade, and Dubai's reputation as a centre for the sale of gold, tourists began to discover the country as they stopped off on their way to the Far East.

When the government made the decision to move from relying on oil revenue to tourism as the country's main source of income, they began the journey that has seen some of the world's best hotels constructed and awesome engineering projects such as the vast palm islands being undertaken are testament to the commitment shown by the rulers in ensuring that the mission statement they set out with of providing the highest standards in the world for visitors choosing Dubai.

Now, established not only as a holiday destination in it's own right, as well as a great place to break a long journey, a break in Dubai provides something for everyone wanting to visit.

As Dubai moves into the 21st century, the ambition of the rulers as they build their dreams is awe-inspiring. Not happy with what they have already achieved, work is underway on the truly gargantuan Burj Dubai complex, which when completed will house offices, apartments, a hotel and a shopping mall. It will rather predictably be a success, and if the rumours closely guarded final height are true, the tallest building in the world will stretch over 600 metres above the ground.
