The most popular spectator sports in Australia are cricket, Aussie Rules football (an almost anarchic mix of rugby and brawling), rugby itself, and of course football.
If you're more interested in taking part, then most cities have several world-class swimming pools, and the coast is excellent for surfing and for swimming and scuba diving throughout much of the year.
Most cities have several large venues that serve a variety of sports, and tournaments such as test matches are regular events that draw large crowds of people. Probably the biggest events in the country's calendar are the Melbourne Gold Cup horse race, and the Fosters Australian Grand Prix, which traditionally kicks off the Formula One Season with a roar of engines, at least one spectacular crash, and of course, almost no overtaking.
