With Australia being so big, its important to plan your trip in advance so that you're not criss-crossing the country repeatedly in order to see everything that you came for. The distances are enormous from coast to coast - several thousand miles: so make sure that your itinerary allows you to do everything you want to in the east before moving on etc.
There is an excellent network of flights that cover Australia from coast to coast, and usually, you can buy an Australian air-pass which will give you several coupons for flights as part of a deal.
There are two major railways in Australia, the Indian Pacific, which runs east-west from Perth to Sydney, and the newly opened Ghan, which runs north-south between Adelaide and Perth. Both take several days to complete their journeys, and a sleeper cabin is offered.
Even if you're only staying around a specific area for a few days, it still makes sense to hire a car so that you can get between the attractions easily. Petrol is good value in Australia, and the roads are good. If you want to travel into the outback, ensure that you take plenty of water, maps, a satellite navigation system, and of course lots of fuel. For your own safety, it pays to take a 4WD-driving course prior to travelling to prepare you for some of the less hospitable terrain that you might encounter.
