The currency in India is the Rupee, although you will find that major credit cards are accepted at most larger hotels and restaurants in major cities. Bank notes stay in circulation for a long time in India, and quite often you will find that they look more like a health risk than actual currency. If a bank note is particularly dirty, many shops will actually refuse to accept them, and on the whole, it's a good idea to do the same if they are offered to you.

Tipping is not customary in India except in the most upmarket restaurants, and even then, it's a few rupees rather than a percentage of the bill.

A common practice is known as Baksheesh, for which read bribing, and its common practice in order to get things done to offer a few rupees.

The cost of living is relatively low, and you can buy meals for less than a pound in many restaurants, and even upmarket places are less than you would think.
