Once the jewel in the crown of Britain's Empire, modern India is home to some of the most wonderful sights in the world. An enormous country with more than a billion people inhabiting it, India is a place of great contrast, from the insane bustle of Mumbai, to the tranquillity of the gardens of the Taj Mahal; India offers something for everybody, whether your preferences lie in exploring ancient ruins, lazing on a tropical beach, or indulging your passions for the latest adrenaline sports in the Himalayas.
India is complex, and a trip to the country will often teach you as much about yourself, than you learn about India, for centuries people have gone there to find themselves, and have loved the place so much that they've stayed forever, while others want to leave as soon as they arrive. If you go to India, travel with an open mind, and you will find that it is an inspiring place that has more to offer than you could ever hope to experience.
Agra is home to the fabled Taj Mahal, probably the most important and beautiful building in the country. It has become the symbol of India, a complicated and impossibly elegant thing of true beauty.
The beaches of Goa in the south west of the country are a big tourist draw, and attract people throughout the year. The reputation for psychedelia and hippie paradise is probably a little dated, and in modern Goa, you're more likely to find that your accommodation is a five star hotel rather than a hammock on the beach, but the party scene still pulls in the punters, and the massive beach parties around Christmas and New Year are legendary.
You can get great deals on flights and accommodation in India throughout the year, although during school holidays and the major festivals it can be difficult to acquire seats unless you book well in advance. Once in India, accommodation is good value, and there is plenty of choice.
