The city of Vancouver only dates back as far as 1867, when the settlement of Gastown sprang up around a small bar, quickly developed into a town, and changed its name to Vancouver in 1887, which it became connected to the rest of the country by rail.
With its proximity to Asia, Vancouver became a vital trading port when the Panama Canal opened in 1914, and the city was soon a thriving place, which attracted many immigrants with the promise of a high standard of living and pleasant scenery close by.
After World War Two, Vancouver began to develop as a modern city, and this climaxed in 1986 when the city hosted the World Fair Expo '86.
Now, with a modern city centre, and the close proximity of the beautiful wilderness areas of the Rocky Mountains and British Colombia, Vancouver is rapidly becoming a city dominated by tourism, and almost every day, a new attraction comes along that promises something more to visitors.
