The year kicks off with something that definitely falls into the latter camp, then on New Years Day, thousands of people shed their clothes and dive into the freezing water of English Bay for the Polar Bear Swim - an annual event since 1819.
Throughout the long summer, a whole host of international festivals take place in the city, including the highly regarded International Comedy Festival and the big Canada Day fireworks and drinking party on July 1st.
