Only settled by the Vikings and Celts in the 9th Century AD, Iceland is the youngest country in the world, both chronologically and geographically.
The island was converted to Christianity in 1000, and fell under Norwegian and then Danish Rule before becoming an independent republic on 17 June 1944. Iceland has a reputation as a progressive democracy, and was the first country in Europe to elect a female prime minister.
