Barbados was first settled at Jamestown (now Holetown) in 1627, and within a couple of years, the population had swollen to over 1000 as more people arrived to cultivate sugar and tobacco in large plantations. With the introduction of sugar later, the wealth of the plantation owners grew and grew.
During the depression in the 1920's and 1930's The British Government became more involved in the processes of the island, but in return for help, the plantation owners were forced to offer more equality to their workers and a part in the governing process. One of the leading reformers was Grantley Adams who later became Prime minister.
Barbados became independent in 1961, and has since developed as one of the best holiday destinations in the world, attracting millions of people every year.
