From the moment you arrive at Chep Lap Kok Airport on Lantau Island, it is immediately clear just how good public transport in Hong Kong is. The Airport Express Railway whisks you into the centre of the city in no time at all, and is scrupulously clean, and very good value.
The new underground in Hong Kong, The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is also good value, and safe too. It serves all the main areas in the centre, although being underground does mean that you miss out on the sights.
Trams run throughout city on the Island, and sitting on the open topped ones along the harbour front is a good way to enjoy the weather on sunny days.
Buses and taxis are available all over the cities, although unless absolutely necessary, avoid using taxis from the mainland onto the island, as going through the tunnels adds around £5 onto the fare.
The outlying islands are well served by a variety of ferries that operate throughout the day, but the most iconic transport is the famous Star Ferry, which operates until about 11 in the evening between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. A one-way ticket costs less than 20p and the 5-minute journey in both directions has some great views and represents the best value in Hong Kong.
