It pays to take a tour of the island to see Port Stanley Market: where you can buy many traditional Chinese goods as well as massive amounts of fake designer wear; and Aberdeen Harbour where some 6000 people live on fishing boats, and the famous Jumbo Floating Chinese Restaurant can be found. A Sampan ride around the harbour will take about fifteen minutes and is a good way to get a sight (and smell) of the area, most of the locals don't mind having their photo taken, although it is considered polite to ask first. Traditionally, the Sampan driver will stop the boat halfway round and ask for more money, claiming that you only paid for the one-way trip out. Unless you fancy a swim in the murky water, its best to pay up.
Repulse Bay on the south of the island has a really good beach, but at the weekend it gets really busy. A much better bet is to get the hydrofoil out to Lantau Island (where the airport is) and go to one of the quieter beach resorts there. Lantau Island is also home to the important Po Lin Monastery, with its many Buddhist temples and gardens. On the hill above the monastery is the gigantic Seated Buddha, one of the largest bronze statues in the world, and accessible at the top of an excruciating climb up over 200 steps. The statue houses a museum and is home to one of the most sacred relics in Buddhism, and photography is strictly forbidden.
