Just off the coast of Fremantle close to Perth, you can visit the famous Rottnest Island, home of the small marsupials known as Quokkas, and not much else. These small rodent like ground dwellers were originally identified as rats, giving the island its name, and a popular local pastime is the rather cruel sounding Quokka soccer, where locals approach the placid vegetarian creatures and then boot them as hard and as far as they can for "kicks".
It should be made clear, that such activity is quite clearly unpleasant and not in the least bit funny, and this website in no way condones it.

Fremantle is around 20 minutes south of central Perth, and accessible either by ferry or by train.
