Pilots with the largest airline in the world, American Airlines, are asking for a major increase in pay, working out at over fifty percent.
The union has put in a proposal to pay the pilots at the levels they were on in 1992, although adjusted for inflation. Since 1992 pilots have accepted pay cuts to avoid bankruptcy for the airline as well as seeing benefits reduced along with no ongoing salary increases. They feel that, with American now performing very well the time is right to bring their salaries back into line.
Management have not suffered in the same way as the pilots and it seems only fair that the people flying the aircraft that keep the company in business should be adequately rewarded for what they do. The unions also advocate an annual increase of six percent plus a cost of living increase and it will be interesting to see how negotiations develop.
American Airlines provide services across the globe, their flights to San Francisco being especially popular from the UK.
