It was announced yesterday that United Airlines, one of the leading global operators, will be adding a fuel surcharge to their internal US flights to counter the ongoing fuel cost increases they have to deal with.
The fuel surcharge is effective immediately and will result in an additional USD10 charge on a return journey, USD5 one-way . So for flights to Los Angeles from New York, as an example, the one way ticket would cost just five dollars more, which is not bad.
The cost will be added to the basic air fare but the carrier wanted to make the reason for the increase very clear. United Airlines see an increase in their annual operating costs of USD65 million for every USD1 rise in the cost of oil, and in this year alone the price has gone up by around forty dollars. So multiply 65 million by forty and you can quickly appreciate the need to cover some of that cost.
