KLM has placed orders for new Boeing aircraft, specifically three of the new 737-300 and two wide bodied 777-300ER. As well as a couple of options KLM has taken, the order value is worth over USD700 million.
This new request from KLM gives them a total of six 777s on order, with the first delivery due in early 2008. The airline has a fleet of 15 of the long haul aircraft already, with these new orders adding to their complement. The 737s will bolster KLMs position in the European market, maintaining their strong presence in the short-haul arena.
One of the key benefits of the new aircraft is much improved efficiency, a factor that greatly impacts the carriers bottom line figures. They know that in todays environment reducing fuel usage and waste gases is fundamental to the long term survival of the industry. Flights to Perth for example will be around twenty-five percent more economical than they used to be, a major saving.
