After initially revealing that United Airlines would be awarded the contract to operate services between Beijing and Washington DC in January, the Transportation Department in the USA has finalised plans for the service and confirmed final approval on United Airlines plans.
Services will begin on schedule, with the first flights to Beijing taking off from Washington in March. United Airlines will operate the service using Boeing 747 aircraft with a 3 class configuration designed to appeal to business and leisure travellers alike.
The emerging tourism market in China along with the phenomenal economic growth in trade with the west have meant that competition to operate the newly annopunced routes was fierce, with the competing airlines fighting tooth and nail for the contracts.
Although Continental, Northwest Airlines, and American Airlines missed out on the flagship capital city service, other less prestigious flights to China are still up for grabs, and will be confirmed soon.
