Despite assurances from various airport operators over the last few days that the forecast blizzards would not affect flights at all, passengers hoping to depart the country today have found themselves grounded as many of the main UK airports were closed after snow clogged runways and hampered visibility.
Amongst the hardest hid airports were London City and Cardiff, which were both completely closed due to the weather. Manchester Airport was operating normally at 9am, although with heavy snow forecast across the northwest of England during the day, delays and possible closure remain likely.
A spokesman for BAA, which operates most UK airports advised passengers to check that their flight was operating before leaving for the airport, and also to allow additional time to travel from their home due to the poor driving conditions in many parts of the UK.
