Qantas is rumoured to be considering the purchase of several new extended range Boeing 777 aircraft that will allow it to offer direct non-stop flights between the UK and Australia for the first time.
Very few commercial aircraft in the world are capable of flying for 24 hours without refuelling, but the Boeing 777-200ER would allow Qantas to offer direct flights to Sydney from London Heathrow, which would prove very popular with travellers.
The only drawback from a business point of view is that the aircraft would be operating at the very limits of its capabilities, and would only be able to carry 120 passengers on the route, leading to a premium of around 30 percent on airfares, although many people would be willing to pay the extra to avoid the inconvenience of a stop off in the far east along the way.
