Bosses at Belfast Airport have introduced short stay parking fees with immediate effect to put an end to free parking for people who were simply picking people up or dropping them off.
Until today, there was a 10-minute grace period in which drivers were allowed to park for free, but this was widely abused by people driving out of the car park and returning while they waited for loved ones to arrive.
From today there will be a flat rate of GBP1.50 per half hour at the airport. The move was met with anger by consumer groups, who claimed that it was aimed at raising revenue for the airport rather than addressing any real issues, while local residents claimed that the move would worsen congestion around the airport as drivers sought alternative parking in the area.
