Cathay Pacific has followed the lead of other airlines by reducing its fuel surcharges to reflect the falling price of jet fuel on the international market. The new prices, which are already in effect, mean a saving of around GBP1 each way on a long haul flight.
The high price of jet fuel is cited by most airlines as their principal business cost, and as prices rose last summer, many carriers charged sky-high fees to cover the additional costs, although with prices now dropping back to more normal levels, many are now reducing the impact on passengers.
Although the reduction offered by Cathay Pacific is less than that presented by most other long haul carriers, their surcharges are somewhat lower already, at around GBP30 each way on a long haul flight opposed to more than GBP50 on Singapore Airlines.
Cathay Pacific are also examining other ways of reducing costs including flying planes that are entirely stripped of paint to reduce weight, and seeking higher passenger numbers, on their core routes such as flights to Hong Kong.
