Safety concerns about the aging fleet of Pakistan International Airlines could see the carrier banned from European destinations unless it undergoes a major renewal scheme. Last year the EU banned around 100 carriers from European airspace over concerns that they did not meet minimum safety criteria and put passengers at risk.
The airlines banned last year were mainly small African carriers such as Burkina Faso Air, but the threat to PIA represents the most high profile airline to be targeted by the EU.
All but 7 of the planes operated by PIA will be banned from European Air Space in a move that is likely to cause chaos for travellers already booked on flights to Karachi with the airline.
