Atlanta based Delta Air lines has been boosted by a vote from creditors that has backed the internal reorganisation of the carrier rather than a recent bid for control made by US Airways. Speculation over a possible takeover from US Airways has been ongoing for several months, but now seems to be off the cards after US Airways withdrew their USD 5 billion offer.
Delta Air Lines will continue to go it alone, and is scheduled to end its bankruptcy protection this spring.
The long-term outlook for the US Aviation industry remains optimistic, and other mergers are still thought to be on the cards, with cash rich US Airways rumoured to be considering a bid for either United or Northwest in the near future.
The marriage between US and Delta would have offered great stability, and was seen as ideal due to the complementary route networks. Delta offers many flights to the USA, while US Airways core business is on its domestic network.
