Airfares for flights across the American Airlines network will increase in the coming months as the carrier seeks increase profits by charging passengers more. The airline claims that rising fuel prices in recent years have stretched its margins, and the rises are necessary to maintain its competitive position in the market.
American Airlines will continue to offer heavily discounted lead in prices for flights to New York and on other routes, but fewer seats will be made available to passengers on the lowest fares.
The announcement by American Airlines was followed by talk of similar pricing changes at bankrupt Delta Air Lines, which is seeking to leave Chapter 11 protection this spring.
