The new low cost subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, Fly Asian Xpress has announced that it is to invest more than USD2.75 billion in purchasing a fleet of up to 15 Airbus A330 Aircraft to operate its core routes when it begins operations later this year.
The new airline, which is to concentrate on short haul flights within Malaysia is the sister project to the new Air Asia budget carrier, which is aiming to offer very cheap flights to Kuala Lumpur from London Heathrow. Malaysian Airlines itself, which is currently restructuring has launched the two new airlines in a bid to increase overall passenger numbers, while also investigating how low cost techniques can be incorporated into its main airline model without compromising on the passenger experience that it already offers.
