A very good way to see the many attractions of Sri Lanka and something that is becoming increasingly popular is to take a guided tour of much of the island in the first week of a holiday, and follow this with a week relaxing on the beach on the South West Coast. Some of the usual highlights of any tour of Sri Lanka are the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage; The Tea Plantations around Kandy; the ruined city of Polonnaruwa; the wildlife reserves of Yala wildlife park, where you can go on Safari and see many indigenous species including elephants; and the commercial capital Colombo, where there is excellent value to be had on shopping, with particularly good bargains to be had for embroidery, jewellery and locally produced wood carvings.
