Not long ago, the citadel of Bam was one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Iran, but all that changed in December 2003, when an earthquake destroyed much of the 2000 year old structure, and killed around 40,000 people. While not exactly off limits, this grieving region is best left alone.

Shiraz in the middle of the country gives its name to a wine (no longer produced in tee-total Islamic Iran) and is famous as a major seat of learning. The city is one of the most pleasant in the country, with a variety of interesting buildings of monuments and buildings along wide tree lined roads. It is also a good place to stay, and has some excellent well-priced hotels.

Persepolis, which lies in the South of the country close to Shiraz was the seat of the Persian Shah at the time of Alexander the Great, and is the site of some of the most amazing ruins in the country. The massive palace that once stood there was only rediscovered in the 1930s, and although it has been mostly stripped of anything of tangible value, there are some parts still visible, and with a map you can get a feel for what was once there.
