Formerly Persia, Iran evolved into its modern Islamic identity with the revolution of 1979 when the shah was overthrown and sent into exile. Despite its international reputation as a member of the "Axis of Evil" and persistent stories about the hard line government's treatment of the population, Iran is a rewarding place to visit, rich in history and culture, with plenty to do for almost any traveller, whether they want to explore ancient ruins, or go skiing at one of the resorts in the mountainous north of the country.
Most visitors to the country arrive into Tehran and are often struck by how congested, ugly and grimy the city is, however, it is well worth hanging around in one of Tehran's excellent hotels for a few days in order to visit the many well stocked museums that are mainly in the centre of the city, and contain breathtaking exhibits including the quite ludicrous Persian crown jewels, which are perhaps the most ostentatious collection of gaudy baubles in the world, and well worth a look.
After a few days getting lost in the sprawling dirty maze that is Tehran, visitors relish the chance of some clean air and open space, and head out to explore the rest of the country, where they will find the real treasure of the country: it's glorious past.
You can get cheap deals on flights to Iran throughout the year, and with a reasonably low cost of living once in the country, it can be a surprisingly cheap destination to visit, and one that is guaranteed to open your eyes to an entirely different culture.
