Cox's Bazaar is Bangladesh's only beach resort and close to the Myanmar border is home to a good number of refugees from the regime there. It has a relaxed feel similar to the rest of the country, although visitors should be aware that locals might be offended by revealing swimwear.
About 75KM south of Dhaka are the ruins of the important Buddhist site of Mainimati, where more than 50 baked brick buildings are preserved. There are also some nice statues to look at, and Mainimati is a must for devotees.
Sundarbans National Park stretches inland from the sea, and has the largest Littoral Mangrove Swamp in the world as well as the last traces of Jungle what once covered the whole of the river plains of Bangladesh. Trekking is possible, although you should hire a guide, as aside from the 30,000 spotted deer in the area, the region is home to some 400 Royal Bengal Tigers.
