Bangladesh borders India and lies at the head of the Bay of Bengal. Once a part of the India of the British Maharajahs and formerly known as East Pakistan, Bangladesh is known as the most crowded country on Earth although once there, the 10 people per square kilometre does not really feel like a squeeze, and the independent traveller can find space at attractions to enjoy.
Dhaka the capital is a clean and quiet city. There are markets to explore, and haggling over price is welcomed. In fact if you plan to travel through the rural parts of the country, Dhaka is the place to stock up, as elsewhere, even basics are sometimes hard to find.
The Old City lies along the bank of the Buriganga River, and still bustles with locals going about their business. Out side the bright pink Ashan Manzil palace is a great place to get a cup of freshly picked tea and watch the people go by.
The central district known informally as New Dhaka is the commercial capital, where banks travel agencies and other businesses are, and is a place where you can find the main local tour companies who will be able to arrange guided trips into the less accessible parts of the country for you.
You can get great deals on flights to Dhaka and Bangladesh throughout the year, and the relatively low cost of living in the country means that travelling in Bangladesh is great value for money.
