No visitor travelling to South Africa should miss the chance to see the big 5 on a safari, and there are plenty of large, well-stocked game reserves throughout the country where you can spend a few days. The largest and best known is the Kruger National Park in the east of South Africa, which has been carved up into smaller privately run concessions, but others that are worth considering are Shamwari - close to Port Elizabeth (ideal as part of a trip along the Garden Route), and Pilanesburg, (just outside the Sun City resort). The game lodges in the parks range in standard from basic to luxury, but on the whole they are inclusive of all meals and game drives, making them very good value for money.
You should ideally book your stay in one of the lodges in advance of travel as they tend to be quite small and get busy at peak times such as school holidays.
