The currency used in Bulgaria is the Leva, and credit cards are welcomed in the larger cities such as Sofia, where there are many cash points that accept Visa and Cirrus Cards.
The cost of living remains low in Bulgaria, and away from the tourist areas, there are cafes where you can get a meal for two people including wine for less than £5, although expect to pay at least triple that in the nicer restaurants.
On the whole tipping is only expected in the better restaurants and hotels - particularly in the larger cities, where 10% is about the norm, in local restaurants and in cabs, it is customary to round the bill up to the nearest whole number.
