Bulgaria lies in to the East of Europe on the Black Sea Coast. Until about 10 years ago it was a part of the Communist block, and as such much of its tourism industry is still in its infancy.
The Capital city, Sofia is where most visitors arrive, and is situated in the West of the country. Surrounded by urban sprawl that is a testament to the country's Communist past, the city centre of Sofia is a mix of the new and old, with particular highlights being the beautiful Sveta Nedelya Cathedral and the peaceful city centre gardens at Ploschtad Batenburg.
Visitors, to Bulgaria's pleasant Black Sea Coast will find that the area provides plenty good beaches and Soviet style resorts, although newer hotels to attract a more Western market are beginning to open. And the Rila Mountains have a good variety of developing ski resorts that are very cheap in comparison with their rivals in more established destinations. Borovets in particular is considered to be one of the best, having a good variety of slopes.
You can get cheap deals on flights to Sofia in Bulgaria and other cities throughout the year, and the low cost of living in the country means that a short break, or even a longer holiday exploring the whole country are often very good value in comparison with other similar destinations.
