Although the area around Jo'burg has been settled for thousands of years, the city itself only really began to develop in 1866 at the time of the gold rush, when thousands of prospectors descended on the richest vein of gold in the country and began to furiously mine it.
Early Johannesburg was a frontier city, where bars and brothels shared space with the fortune tellers and medicine men from the local Bantu tribes, but it did not take long for the seeds of the apartheid movement to be sown in the city, and segregation of the population gradually took place, with the blacks confined to menial jobs and townships around the city.
Apartheid ended officially in 1994, and since then, the population has been integrated, although there are still areas of extreme poverty around the city, and close by, wealthy areas protected by private security guards and razor wire.
