On a collection of islands just to the south of the city, and easily accessible by ferry from the harbour is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Suomenlinna, an historic Sea Fortress that protected the city for many years when Finland was a part of the Swedish Empire, and was built as a defence against the Russians, and now houses several museums as well as the famous Maa art school, and a large community of painters and sculptors.
